My favorite part of reading books is how deeply we get to know characters. And I‘m definitely guilty of being very emotionally attached to characters to the point their well-being can feel more important to me than real-life people. One of my absolute favorite characters to get to know are the ones I can swoon over. Here are my six book boyfriends that have a special place in my heart and/or that I would fight someone for if they were real.

WARNING: Some spoilers ahead

Maxon Schreave

Maxon is 100% why I love the selection series as much as I do. He was such a genuinely good guy. Even though look-wise I didn’t really find him attractive at the beginning, my thoughts on him quickly changed as soon as I saw how he interacted with America.

I loved how he was respectful of America not being ready for a relationship since she was recently heartbroken by Aspen and how their romance started out as friends first. Every scene with him made my reading experience better and gave me a sense of calm when I was stressed by America’s indecisiveness.

(*spoiler alert!*) I’m just happy that America came to her senses and choose Maxon because if not, I would have had step into the book and knock some sense into her.

Augustus Waters

Augustus Waters was truly the first character that broke my heart. I’m still not okay after reading The Fault in Our Stars. It’s extremely hard to not fall in love with Augustus’s character when you read the book. Then you end up slowly being torn apart as you see him break down piece by piece tragically because of cancer, It’s so heartbreaking.

(*spoiler alert!*) If he had survived, he would have made such a great boyfriend because he had such a big heart and was such a optimistic person who wanted to be remembered as a hero.

Emperor Kai

Out of all the men from the Lunar Chronicles, Kai is the one I find most relationship material (even though I love Thorne). He went through a lot throughout the series.

(*spoiler alert!*) Kai was the one that had the pressure of needing to have self control when being engaged to Queen Levana. While also loyally caring for Cinder even when he didn’t know where she was.

I respect a good character that is loyal to the ones they love so Kai definitely got points for that. He didn’t care about Cinder being a cyborg but loved her for who she was as a person. I loved his sassy moments so much and how he was confident as a leader of the eastern commonwealth even during very stressful situations.

Gilbert Blythe

Sigh… Gilbert. He’s my ideal man. He is loyal, patient, hardworking, and kind. He is the boy next door and the nice guy but in the best way. Even though he started off on the wrong foot (or slate hehe), he instantly was apologetic and kept trying to prove to Anne how sorry he was.

He loved Anne just the way she was and didn’t try to change her. But at the same time challenged her to motivate her or tried to help ground her when she was too “in the clouds”. Which honestly something I really would need in a potential partner in real life, to be grounded when I’m too much but still give me the freedom to do things in my own way.

Mr. Darcy

No one should be surprised that Mr. Darcy is on this list. Mr. Darcy is pretty much every girl’s fantasy. Mr. Darcy isn’t perfect though, he is socially awkward, prideful, and really bad at confessing his feelings. But his imperfections are what make him so endearing and relatable (especially for introverts).

We love him because he acknowledges his weaknesses and works on improving himself because of his love for Elizabeth. Which is very beautiful and something everyone can learn from.

Ponyboy Curtis

Even though he isn’t as close to my heart as all the others on this list, he was my first ever “book boyfriend”. I read The Outsiders in middle school for English and this experience ignited my love for characters and their stories. I cared about all the characters in The Outsiders, but Ponyboy Curtis was the character I truly connected with.

I enjoyed Ponyboy’s softness, how  he simply enjoyed how beautiful sunsets were, and his struggle with the social issues compared with his ideal world. I guess I understood and connected with Ponyboy because of that.

So those are my book boyfriends. Any book boyfriends you think I forgot about? Who are your book boyfriends? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. My favorite book boyfriends are definitely Finnick Odair, Will Herondale and Carswell Thorne. But you’re right, there are really too many to choose from!

Same, there are too many to choose from! Carswell Thorne and Finnick Odair are great, too.
