The King's 100 Book Tour: Mini-Review and Favorite Quotes

Today is my stop on The Kings 100 book tour! Thanks TBR and Beyond Tours for letting me be a part of this tour.

If you are looking for a cute fish-out-water story with thought-provoking themes, teenage drama, and plenty of sugary foods then I think you would enjoy this book. For The King’s 100 Book Tour, I’m doing a short mini review because there wasn’t a lot I feel like I can say about why I gave it my rating without spoilers. But for extra content, I also added a list of my favorite quotes that I thought were funny or interesting. Hope you enjoy!

Book Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old princess, Piper Parish, is a disappointment to the citizens of Capalon, a STEM-structured kingdom where innovation is valued above all. Her older sister, the queen, views Piper’s tears during their parents’ funeral as a weakness, not to mention her strange affinity for singing. When Piper receives an anonymous note stating her mother is still alive and living in the enemy kingdom of Mondaria, Piper chooses to risk death and flees Capalon to prove once and for all that she’s not just the queen’s defective little sister.

Posing as a Mondarian citizen named Paris Marigold, Piper bumps into a cute black-haired boy named Ari who encourages her to audition for the King’s 100, an esteemed performance court of singers, magicians, and drummers. Piper lands a spot as a singer and dives head-first into a world of glittering dresses, girl-code, sugar, blackmail, and physical contact-all while taking direction from an evil maestro.Under Mondarian law, Piper will be killed if her identity is revealed. But living a life without the freedom to love might actually be the most dangerous risk of all.

Mini-Review:

  • There were many moments of both cultural and personality differences clashed which was entertaining and funny to me. (See quotes down below for some examples)
  • I thought the idea of an entire kingdom focused on STEM and innovation above everything else including things like emotions and love was interesting.
  • I loved all the mentions of sugary foods and drinks like hot chocolate and pastries in Mondaria!
  • I related to Piper’s struggle with her emotional side and the logical side of her that she was brought up with.
  • I liked lot’s of the side characters as well, Especially Layla and Darden.
  • I appreciated that there were friendships between Piper and other boys that were completely platonic and that wasn’t turned into love triangles just to add needless drama.

My Favorite Quotes:

If you love somebody, you go back to them. You always find a way to go back to them.

This is definitely a romantic and sweet quote that I think showcases this story as a whole very well.

When I was five years old, I self-diagnosed a viral infection from examining my own blood sample under a microscope. During a particularly rainy summer, I built a central processing unit in one day. I was the product of a kingdom that believed in science, facts and rational thinking above all. But if I wanted to find my mother, I had to throw rational thinking out the window and take direction from a deranged man with a chair on his head.

This is a scene I thought was funny but also dived more into what life in the kingdom that Piper is from would be like.

You imagine love to be greater than it is in reality, so when you finally get it, you end up disappointed in one way or another.

I like this quote a lot because it’s true in a lot of ways. We all can have a tendency to overidealize love and romance to the point that when we actually experience it, it can be disappointing or underwhelming.

“Is that your type? The playboys?” he asked with a cunning smile.

“No,” Layla said, turning to face Reese. “The playboys are still boys and I need a man.”

This quote just reminds me of why I like Layla because she is awesome.

“You okay, Paris? Do you have stage fright or something?”

I stared at a small stain on the rug. “There’s no such thing as stage fright, only the autonomic nervous system’s reaction to a stimulus which sends the body into a fight-or-flight response.”

“Um, what?” asked Layla with a laugh.

I liked how the main characters culture and personality was different from the land she is hiding in and how that leads to moments like this that I thought were very funny.

Layla ended the conversation for me by telling Genevieve and Heather to duck-off. Or was it something else? Buck? Whatever it was, it was a conversation ender that I wanted to remember for the future.

Oh, Piper you innocent naive sweet soul!

Why did everything with Mondarian girls have to center on their romantic interests? Why did they have to assume that every relationship was built on attraction?

I personally like this quote a lot because it reminds me of how I feel as demisexual when other girls my age are obsessed with their crushes on boys and dating.

Ari was the first to ask a question. “Are you getting along with your roommate?”

I nodded. “She’s very…strong-willed but has been a decent person for temporary cohabitation.”

Ari smiled. “Cohabitation?”

“Oh, I mean—”

“No, I like it. I like you and your funny words.”

Heat rushed to my face, so I stabbed my eggs.

I like this moment between the main character and her love interest, showing a aspect of their dynamic together that I personally liked a lot.
