Top Five Wednesday (T5W) is a weekly book meme hosted by Gabriela. You can check out the group here for more discussions and topics. Today’s topic is Best Friendships.

These are the companionships that just worked so well or added so much value to the plot, it’s character dynamics that worked well together. We love a good friendship. Also, you could do this from the perspective of the characters themselves, or how the friendship evolved during their storyline.

*Warning: There may be spoilers*

1) Cinder and Thorne from The Lunar Chronicles

Cinder and Thorne are the ultimate BroTP! Their friendship was such a gem in this series, their sibling-like dynamic was so much fun to read.

Thorne scoffed. “Careful is my middle name. Right after Suave and Daring.”

“Do you even know what you’re saying half the time?” asked Cinder.

2) Anne and Diana from Anne of Green Gables

This list couldn’t be completed without these “bosom friends” on this list! I love their friendship in the books, especially in the first one. The scene when Anne and Diana have to part ways, even though I know it’s only for a short time, always makes me tear up.

“Oh, Diana, will you promise faithfully never to forget me, the friend of your youth, no matter what dearer friends may caress thee?”

“Indeed I will,” sobbed Diana, “and I’ll never have another bosom friend–I don’t want to have. I couldn’t love anybody as I love you.”

“Oh, Diana,” cried Anne, clasping her hands, “do you love me?”

“Why, of course I do. Didn’t you know that?”

“No.” Anne drew a long breath. “I thought you liked me of course but I never hoped you loved me. Why, Diana, I didn’t think anybody could love me. Nobody ever has loved me since I can remember. Oh, this is wonderful! It’s a ray of light which will forever shine on the darkness of a path severed from thee, Diana. Oh, just say it once again.”

“I love you devotedly, Anne,” said Diana stanchly, “and I always will, you may be sure of that.”

“And I will always love thee, Diana,” said Anne

3) Cath and Reagan from Fangirl

Friendships in books where the characters are very different people but complement each other well tend to be my favorite. I think Cath and Reagan are good examples of this because they couldn’t be more different people but they have a nice dynamic together. There were many moments where I couldn’t help but laugh at their conversations and banter.

Reagan sat at the end of her own bed. “He’s not my boyfriend,” she said solemnly. “And I knew he liked you—he was here constantly. I just didn’t know that you liked him back.”

“I thought he was here constantly because he was your boyfriend,” Cath said. “I didn’t want to like him back. I tried to be mean to him.”

“I thought you were just mean,” Reagan said. “I liked that about you.”

4) Jo and Laurie from Little Women

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I’m one of the few people who actually think Jo was right to reject Laurie’s proposal and that they were better as just friends. I loved their dynamic as friends and truly thought of it better as platonic. There’s a blog post I read recently that explained why they weren’t romantically right for each other and I think it explained it well, go check it out.

5) Sherlock and Watson from the Sherlock Holmes Series

The famous crime-solving duo! How could I not at least mention Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson! Sherlock being the brain and Watson being the heart worked very well, to the point many fans even ship them together. Though I don’t ship them, I definitely love their friendship and my favorite version is BBCs Sherlock.

So that’s my T5W post for this week’s topic! Hope you enjoyed, what’s your favorite book friendships?

  1. Totally agree on Cinder and Thorne. I even shipped them in the beginning, but now it’s perfect the way it is. I’m also a big fan of Cinder and Iko’s friendship!
